Quick Answer
The 2026 South Carolina State Fair runs October 15-25 at the State Fairgrounds, 1200 Rosewood Drive in Columbia. The 2026 Coastal Carolina Fair runs October 29-November 8 at Exchange Park, 9850 Highway 78 in Ladson. Both fairs enforce a clear bag policy (12″ x 6″ x 12″ maximum) and ban weapons. The State Fair requires anyone under 18 to be with a parent age 21 or older after 5 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and all day Friday and Saturday. If you are hurt at either fair, report it to fair staff, get medical care, photograph the hazard, and call The Thumbs Up Guys. The Thumbs Up Guys will be at both fairs this year, handing out free merch and Uber vouchers.
Fall in South Carolina means fair season. Every October, families from across the state pack the fairgrounds in Columbia for the South Carolina State Fair, and just a week later, the Lowcountry heads to Ladson for the Coastal Carolina Fair. Between the two, that’s 22 days of fried food, carnival rides, livestock shows, concerts, and memories.
This year, The Thumbs Up Guys will be at both. It’s our first year with a booth at the South Carolina State Fair and our second year sponsoring the Coastal Carolina Fair, and we’ll be at both with free merch, Uber vouchers, and more.
As personal injury attorneys with offices in Columbia and North Charleston, we also know that big crowds, heavy traffic, temporary rides, and late nights come with real risks. This guide covers everything you need to know before you go: dates, hours, bag rules, parking, ride safety, and what to do if something goes wrong.

How Can You Stay Safe at the Fair This Year?
Plan ahead for traffic and parking
Both fairgrounds draw thousands of cars a day, and the roads around them back up fast before gates open and right after closing. In Columbia, the State Fairgrounds sit next to Williams-Brice Stadium, so traffic can get heavier on event days. In Ladson, Highway 78 near Exchange Park is a busy two-way corridor that slows to a crawl on weekend nights.
Tips to navigate fair traffic safely:
- Arrive early on weekends, when crowds and traffic peak.
- Use rideshare or a designated driver. At the State Fair, rideshare and drop-offs use the North Gate at 1200 Rosewood Drive, near the Rocket. Drivers can pull up to unload or pick up, but they cannot park there.
- Take the bus in Columbia. The COMET Route 61 stops at the State Fairgrounds hourly from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Watch for pedestrians in and around the parking lots, especially after dark. Families with strollers and small children are everywhere.
- Never double-park or stop in a travel lane to drop someone off.
- Leave extra time to exit. Everyone leaves at once at closing, and tired, rushed drivers make mistakes.
Know the clear bag rules
Both fairs have a mandatory clear bag policy. If your bag doesn’t meet the rules, you will be sent back to your car.
What’s allowed:
- Clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bags no larger than 12″ x 6″ x 12″
- A one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Coastal Carolina Fair)
- Medically necessary items, after inspection
- Diaper bags with a baby, after inspection (SC State Fair). At the Coastal Carolina Fair, diapers and baby supplies must go in a clear bag.
What to leave at home:
- Purses, backpacks, fanny packs, and non-clear bags
- Weapons of any kind, including pepper spray and knives
- Alcohol and outside food or drinks (sealed or empty water bottles are allowed)
- Coolers and glass containers
- Pets (only ADA service animals are allowed)
- Drones, selfie sticks, and tripods
At the SC State Fair, guests with food allergies or professional camera equipment can request a pre-approved exception, but you must submit it at least 24 hours in advance.
Leave the Halloween costume at home
Both fairs run over the Halloween season, but costumes can get you turned away. The SC State Fair bans costumes, cosplay, full-face masks, and anything that hides your identity or could be mistaken for staff or law enforcement. The Coastal Carolina Fair, which is open on Halloween weekend, bans masks meant to hide your identity.
How to stay safe on fair rides
Fair rides are assembled, taken apart, and moved from town to town all season. In South Carolina, amusement rides must be inspected and permitted by the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR) before they can operate. Even so, accidents happen when equipment fails or rides are run carelessly.
Ride safety tips:
- Follow height and age limits. They exist for a reason, even if your child is close.
- Secure loose items. Phones, hats, and sunglasses become projectiles on fast rides.
- Keep hands and feet inside and stay seated until the ride comes to a full stop.
- Watch the operator. If a ride operator seems distracted, or a ride makes unusual noises or jerks, skip it.
- Speak up. If a restraint doesn’t lock or feels loose, tell the operator before the ride starts.
Keep track of your kids
Fair crowds are big, loud, and easy to get lost in.
- Take a photo of your child when you arrive so you have their current outfit on hand.
- Pick a meeting spot that’s easy to find, like a landmark or the main gate.
- Write your phone number on your child’s arm or put a card in their pocket.
- Know the SC State Fair youth policy. Anyone under 18 must be with a parent age 21 or older after 5 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and all day Friday and Saturday. That includes teens being dropped off.
Pace Yourself at the Beer Garden
Alcohol is not allowed at the SC State Fair. At the Coastal Carolina Fair, adults 21 and older can enjoy a drink in the designated beer garden areas. Drink responsibly, stay hydrated, and plan your ride home before your first drink. If you’re at the Coastal Carolina Fair, stop by The Thumbs Up Guys booth at the big beer garden for an Uber voucher.
Dress for October Weather
October days can be warm and nights can be cool, and both fairs are open rain or shine. Wear closed-toe shoes for walking on gravel, grass, and uneven ground. Bring a light layer for after sunset, and check the forecast before you leave.

What Should You Do If You’re Injured at the Fair?
A fun day at the fair is the goal. But when accidents happen, what you do in the first few hours can make a big difference in your health and your ability to recover compensation.
Car Accidents in Fair Traffic
Fair traffic brings unfamiliar drivers, packed parking lots, distracted pedestrians, and tired families heading home after dark. That combination leads to crashes.
If you’re involved in a car accident on the way to or from the fair:
- Call 911 and stay at the scene. A police report is key evidence for any insurance claim.
- Get medical care right away, even if you feel fine. Adrenaline can hide injuries like whiplash and concussions.
- Take photos and video of both vehicles, the road, signs, and your injuries.
- Exchange information with the other driver: name, license, insurance, and registration.
- Don’t admit fault to the other driver, bystanders, or on social media.
- Call The Thumbs Up Guys before you talk to an insurance adjuster. Insurance companies move fast to pay as little as possible. We’ll protect your rights from the first call.
Slip-and-Fall Injuries on the Fairgrounds
Fair operators and vendors have a legal duty to keep their grounds reasonably safe for guests. When they don’t, and someone gets hurt, that may be a premises liability claim.
Common fairground hazards include:
- Uneven ground, holes, and gravel paths
- Spilled drinks, grease, and food near vendor areas
- Loose cables, extension cords, and tent stakes
- Poor lighting in parking lots and walkways after dark
- Wet or muddy ground after rain
- Crowded walkways where people get pushed or tripped
If you slip, trip, or fall at the fair:
- Report it to fair staff right away and ask for a written incident report. Get a copy or write down the report number and staff names.
- Photograph the exact hazard before it’s cleaned up or moved.
- Get witness names and phone numbers. Fair crowds move on quickly.
- Get medical care and keep records of your injuries.
- Keep your evidence, including your ticket, wristband, receipts, and shoes.
- Call The Thumbs Up Guys. We’ll find every party that may be responsible and fight for the compensation you deserve.
Amusement Ride Injuries
Ride injuries can be serious, from whiplash and head injuries to broken bones. They can be caused by mechanical failure, poor maintenance, faulty restraints, or operator error. Several parties may share responsibility, including the ride owner, the operator, the maintenance company, the ride manufacturer, and the fair itself.
If you or your child is hurt on a ride:
- Tell the ride operator and fair staff immediately and ask for an incident report.
- Note the ride name and location and take photos of the ride.
- Get witness contact information.
- Get medical care right away, especially for any head, neck, or back injury.
- Call an attorney quickly. Traveling rides leave town when the fair ends, and evidence goes with them.
Rideshare Accidents
Rideshare accident claims are more complicated than regular car accident cases. Several insurance policies may apply, depending on what the driver was doing when the crash happened. Uber, Lyft, and their insurers will often try to push responsibility onto the driver’s personal policy.
The Thumbs Up Guys understand rideshare liability in South Carolina, whether you were a passenger, a pedestrian hit outside the fairgrounds, or another driver.

When Should You Call a Personal Injury Attorney?
Call as soon as possible after any injury at or around the fair, not weeks or months later. Here’s why timing matters:
- Evidence disappears fast. Security footage gets erased, hazards get fixed, and traveling rides are packed up and moved to the next town when the fair ends.
- Insurance companies move quickly. An adjuster may call within days asking for a recorded statement or offering a fast settlement. Once you accept, you usually can’t ask for more, even if your injuries turn out to be worse.
- There are deadlines. South Carolina gives most personal injury claimants three years to file a lawsuit. Waiting is never in your interest.

What if I don’t feel hurt right away? Get checked out anyway. Head, neck, and back injuries often don’t show symptoms right away. A quick medical visit protects your health and your claim.
