This month, Sherrika Myers, founder of Every 1 Voice Matters, unveiled her new children’s book, “A Leader Guided By God.” The book is inspired by the story of North Charleston Mayor Reggie Burgess.
Myers founded Every 1 Voice Matters, a local nonprofit committed to helping children thrive through literacy, confidence building, and introducing them to real-world role models from their own community.
During her speech, Myers shared that her vision for the book is simple yet powerful: to give young readers characters they can see themselves in and aspire to become. “A Leader Guided By God” reflects Mayor Burgess’ path of faith, perseverance, and service. His story stands as a reminder of what is possible when children believe in themselves and remain committed to their future.
Mayor Burgess spoke about his childhood, the discipline it took to stay on course, and the gratitude he feels for the community he now serves.

In 2025, we attended their Fall Back-to-School Event, where backpacks and school supplies were distributed to local students, as well as their Annual Christmas at City Hall Event, where bikes were built and gifted to over 200 children.
We are honored to have purchased 100 copies of “A Leader Guided By God” to be distributed to students in North Charleston schools. Providing access to this story is an opportunity for children to connect, feel encouraged, and draw inspiration from leaders within their own community.

The book’s impact was already on full display when Thumbs Up Guys partners Jeffrey Ward and Brandon Dawson joined Tracy Burgess, wife of Mayor Reggie Burgess, and Sherrika Myers at Dunston Elementary School. Tracy read “A Leader Guided By God” aloud to students, who also got to meet Lil’ Herbie, and received their very own copy of the book, donated by the Thumbs Up Guys. Seeing the students experience this story firsthand made clear just how meaningful it is to put books like this directly into the hands of our community’s children.
