What is the Friday Night Rivals Scholarship?
Friday Night Rivals is a season-long partnership between The Thumbs Up Guys and ABC News 4, built around Friday night high school football across the Lowcountry. Each week during the season, coaches and schools nominate a student athlete who has stood out both on the field and off it. That nominee is recognized during the broadcast, celebrating everything from athletic performance to grades to volunteer work in their community.
At the close of the season, one of these nominees is selected to receive a $5,000 college scholarship, funded by The Thumbs Up Guys.

How does a student get nominated?
Nominees come from high schools across the Lowcountry and are put forward by their coaches and schools. To be considered, a student athlete has to show strength in three areas:
- Academics. Grades, class rank, and academic honors.
- Athletics. Performance and leadership within their sport.
- Community. Volunteer work, leadership roles, and involvement that goes beyond the school hallways.
It is not a scholarship for the fastest player or the highest GPA alone. It is for the student who shows up fully, in every part of their life.

What happens at the end of the season?
Nominations continue throughout the fall football season. Once the season wraps, one nominee is selected as the Friday Night Rivals Scholar Athlete of the Year and awarded the $5,000 scholarship. Winners are typically announced in the following months, and our team is proud to present the scholarship in person.
